Pixie Wings

Pixie Wings

For my second year working as a pixie at latitude festival (you dress up as a fairy or pixie and blow bubbles at kids and help drunk people with directions and welfare) I wanted to make my own wings instead of the wire and mesh ones they give out; like the ones you maybe had at primary school.

From Pinterest, I found a design I really liked but couldn’t find the pattern anywhere for sale — only the finished objects. I’ve never copied a pattern by hand before but decided to give it a go because the shapes seemed easy enough.

I had some fleece from an abandoned project so we’re making fluffy wings :)

The first step was to mark out the wing shapes on the fleece. Then sewing and overlocking (securing) the edges, and inverting them to get bagged wings with soft, rounded edges.

Following this, I made the harness and added the strapping.

I wanted to turn the harness into a bag to store small stuff like ear plugs and snacks.

This just involved sewing a lining fabric onto the backside of the fleece and stitching the zip in.

This also made it easier to invert the harness right side out because I could fold through the zipped edge.

To connect the wings to the harness, the original designer used snap buttons. I expanded this and used the same method for connecting the wings to one another instead of a full stitch.

Using snap buttons reduces the tear risk if the wings get caught on something — they just snap apart or away from the harness!

Finally, we got to wear them at work.

I kept them on for dancing after :-)
